There have been quite a few changes in the composition of the high street in my local town. At once time there were a real variety of stores – three small independent retail department stores were supplemented with local family run boutiques and a sprinkling of solicitors and estate agents – all with office furniture dating back to the 1960s and 1970s. No modern vibrant looks here! Banks and building societies completed the line up. This was before the major players starting merging in take overs and the huge ruthless cull of local offices took their toll. We now have only a couple of each business and no indepenent retailers. The offices that are there, two or three of them are newly formed estate agencies and legal firms. Keen to attract new business, they have furnished their ‘consultation suites’ with smart modern themes – this brings a message of professionalism. They know what they’re doing and where they’re going!
